I used to be an uncle

On our bike ride home this week I told my kids about my ex-wife. We were talking about the definition of “aunt” and “uncle,” and how a person can be an aunt or uncle by marriage. And I said: “I used to be an uncle.”

That led to me dropping the bomb that I had been married to someone else long before I met their mother.

They were surprised — I guess — but more surprising was, they didn’t have a lot of questions. I thought they would at least ask about my former nieces and (step)-nephew.

They did ask: “does Mama know?” Kiddoes, everyone knows. You were the last to find out.
